Cloth-covered Drop Spine Clamshell Box

This type of box is made of British buckram bookcloth and binder's board. It provides strong protection to the item inside for storage and access.

When do we use this type of enclosure?

Custom made for rare collections, best for volumes greater than 1” thick.

See the short video below for handling instruction.

Other possibilities?

Another variation of this box is with a hinged flap (aka. pressure flap) which helps to discourage the tendency of the book cover to warp, mainly for vellum-covered books. The flap lifts out of the way when the box is open, but compresses the book when the box is closed.

Below is a drop spine box with interior cradle, this housing style is useful for items that see frequent display (i.e. on teaching classes, VIP tours).
